Havre de Grace Library

Havre de Grace Library
120 N. Union Ave
So today is the first day of the summer of ME. First off, I am finding very quickly that I do not do well without a schedule. Yikes.. I will be working for the rest of my life it seems because that feels good to me. Unless I can force myself to make a schedule of sorts... this is the plan.

I wanted to go to a library that I had not been to before, but decide instead to blog about this one to show you, my dear sister, what I see. The pictures are obviously amateur and from my cell phone, but they do a fairly good job. It is a lovely place filled with books and wonderment.

What you see when you first walk in

This front desk that you first see isn't always manned. and just out of the picture to the right you can see the beginning of the stairs as pictured  below.  To the left are some conference rooms - very large ones, and I think behind this desk there are offices.

So I had a picture of what you see when you first come up the stairs, but it was blurry so I didn't use it. This picture of the stacks is actually looking back in the direction of the stairs. Cool ceiling, huh?

More stacks
I really like this aisle.. larger with chairs and little tables. The big ring hangs over the service desk which is at the very top of the stairs. Below are the Magazine/Newspaper room and then the view of the stacks walking out of that room. Across the way is a little alcove where I am currently sitting. It is plain and in need of some art work, but has tables to sit with one's computer. It usually has people in it, working on their laptops.

The Magazine Room has to be my favorite due to the brightness and the view of the street; however, if I am here to grade papers, it is not the best place to sit. From this view of the stacks, there are more arm chairs with little tables behind me which is at the front of the library which is covered in windows - also a beautiful place to sit. I think the fabric of little stones is clever.

Coming out of the Magazine Room to the right is a glassed-in quiet room that can be reserved and a small computer lab. There are more computers near the service desk, but it is pretty loud as they are near the kids' areas.

The rest of the photos are of the kids area, the teen area with a private glassed in reading room, and then from the balcony looking down over the library. The balcony has a place for Maker's Space which is a big thing around here. There are hands on crafts, blocks, drawing supplies and ipads in this space. The rest of the balcony houses more children's books. Sorry the spacing on the pictures is wonky; I am trying to figure out how to post them side by side. I hope when you come to visit you can see it in person!

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn - Betty Smith

I just finished Book One.  I love how this is written and how I feel like I am in Francie's head even though it is written in 3rd person.  I love how she watches the world around her and thinks deeply about the people she sees.  I can relate.  I feel extravagant when thinking of the meager way her family lives. Interesting her thoughts on the Jews and how Jewish women walk proudly when pregnant as they might give birth to Jesus... Irish woman walk shamefully because they will only have a Mick...this made me laugh. I finally met the mom's sister, Sissy. Three husbands! That is scandalous in 1912... it is still a thought that makes most of us go.. um whoa.  Sad that she has had 10 babies who all died. What in the world?! I am not sure I could handle that. She also apparently doesn't purchase the whispered about products from her company. Yikes. Lastly, the food descriptions, again make me feel extravagant, but also make me think of that Cooking with Norma...

Solving the Problem

My day today has been busy and yet overall uneventful. I have put off cleaning and laundry for the most part to finish reading my book, watch some mindless television, and eat perogies. I did time myself clearing off the island because, well you know how things are huge in your head? I did not rush at all and it took me 4 minutes and 37 seconds. I shake my head.   I also went through a laundry basket, made a pile of clothes to give away, organized the basket with blankets including the box with my electric blanket for storage.  pile to give away for storage Now neither of these things call for the title of "Solving the Problem", but what does...comes next. I had been putting off fixing the sink as well. I knew I could do it, and I am still unsure as to why I was procrastinating. I finally said, "Let's go, Jennifer. You need to do this thing." It helped knowing that I was going to blog my adventure for you. small amount of water Thi...
