Rehoboth Beach Library

Each year I go to Rehoboth beach I pass the library.  It's on the main road. You can't miss it. I have always asked those I am with if they want to go in, but never have I done it.  I am not sure why I never did this on my own.  This year as Ray and I sat on the beach I decided. Today was the day.  I'd like to think I decided because I have finally grown enough in my self-awareness to embrace who I am and what I like and not apologize for it. (maybe? 😊) Rehoboth Beach Public Library The Rehoboth Beach Public Library was established in order to provide free access to books for the community. In its early years the library moved between VIA member's homes and public spaces.  In June 1942 the State Library Commission designated space for the library at City Hall, where it remained for 43 years.  VIA member served as librarians until 1968 when the first professional librarian was hired.  The library relocated to Rehoboth Avenue in 1985, where it has remai...

Anne of Avonlea - LM Montgomery

How I love the world created by Montgomery in the Anne books.  The description of nature, the poetry of thought, the need for imagination fill the page.  I was very surprised at my lack of knowledge about the series as I must have read them many moons ago. The comparison to the movies that I hold so dear is sometimes a hard call for the written word somehow creates places that unable to be depicted in film.  I was surprised by the twins and love the character of Miss Lavender in her Echo cottage. Such a feel good place to go. I am looking forward to reading Anne of the Island.  One of my favorite lines... "It does people good to have to do things they don't like...in moderation."   Makes me think of how mum taught me, and I taught my kids, "we all have to do things we don't like to do".  This for sure is part of life.

Educated

Read July 2020 A super engaging memoir that I read in about a week and a half.  I think it is the only NY times best seller I have actually read.  I need to get on that I suppose. It is about Tara's education experience homeschooling on the mountain in Idaho with her fundamental Mormon family that live with many theories on the US government and modern life.  Her life after leaving the mountain inspires one to examine love of family and choice of one's own path.

Light a Penny Candle - Maeve Binchy

Read July 2020 Young Elizabeth is sent from England to Ireland for safety during  WWII.  She lives with the O'Connors and becomes close friends with their daughter of the same age, Aisling (Ashley).  The story follows their lives, and their friendship after the War.  Binchy creates great characters that have qualities to emulate and mortal and ethical situations to ponder. Elizabeth is also close with Mrs. O'Connor, Eileen, who is a foil to her own weak minded mother.  I enjoyed it very much.

Social Media Detox Day 2

We are still away from home so in some ways it is easier to stay away from social media. Also, since this is a new resolution I am more aware staying away from the incessant scrolling.  Last night I was tired and bored so I started reading “Anne of the Island”. I greatly enjoy stories about Anne and her chums. 😊 The challenge of games and mindless scrolling is present but tempered a good deal by my enjoyment of Ms Montgomery’s writing.  My day has been filled with reading. I finally finished Anne of Avonlea and want to start Anne of the Island , but I have a non fiction book study to work on. The book is well written, but the topic is heavy. I am finding myself more and more looking at my phone. I read a news article or two and swiped as if looking for the distraction of FB scrolling or games.  Ugh. When I feel uncomfortable, I look to distract myself with feel good stuff. I wonder if this is part of social media's draw to me...escapism.

No Social Media Challenge

Day 1- August 1, 2020 My over all feeling was a bit of "feeling lost" or "confused" some how.  I felt like I had a ton of time, yet didn't want to do anything.  I think I fill that time with my phone/FB/TikTok/Word Games and do not realize how much time goes by as I truly do nothing and accomplish zilch. This morning I had "more time" to get ready and get out of the house for my haircut. No scrolling FB or watching videos or playing games.  I see this as a plus. I felt uncomfortable with myself because I was also very aware of what I was doing and or not doing.  I think this is because I get sucked into my phone even if I am watching TV and the time just flies.  I almost felt bored with TV without playing Scrabble at the same time.  This bothered me...a lot. I question my focusing skills. I am looking forward to learning more about myself and my thought and behavioral patterns.   I was not at home so that was helpful in many ways. I did feel restl...

Heart and Soul - Maeve Binchy

Clara is a cardiologist who seems like she is taking a lesser job when she begins working at a new heart clinic.  Declan a doctor who comes to work there, car crash, marries nurse Fiona. What stood out mostly was that I am not privy to the community created in the books.  I am thinking if I read the books Chronologically then I would know the characters better. I have read other books of hers and remembered a little of Quentins and the Scarlet Feather when the character reappeared in this book. I need to check my library list at home and update the list below with those I own. Below is the list of books:
